Friends of Heritage Sites (FoHS) presents the Prof. R. Venkataraman Memorial Lecture Series 2024 on July 6 at V.S. Chellam Century Hall, Madurai, focusing on “Cultural Formation, Urbanization, and Water Management in Late Prehistoric and Historical Tamil Nadu.” This series features three insightful lectures: Dr. V. Vedachalam (Retd. Senior Epigraphist) will explore ancient irrigation systems in Pandya country, shedding light on Tamil Nadu’s sophisticated water management that supported agrarian and temple economies. Prof. V. Selvakumar of Tamil University will discuss Neolithic and Iron Age social structures, while Mr. K. Amarnath Ramakrishna (ASI) will present findings from the Keeladi excavation — a major archaeological site revealing evidence of an urban Tamil civilization dating back to 5th century BCE. These lectures are vital for understanding Tamil Nadu’s cultural depth and early urban development.
